The month June is different in
Corunna. the arrival of the Celebrations of San Juan is creating a special
atmosphere. The hoqueras of San Juan are all
a tradition in Corunna. The beaches of Orzan and Riazor fill of
bonfires being to 24:00 at night when fire to the Great Fault is put. Before the arrival of the summer solstice, agreeing
approximately with the festividad of San Juan, from preRoman times,
diverse ritual celebrations have been made igniting bonfires. Is
enough like example, to mention, the famous bonfires of San Juan, that
take place in the Spanish Mediterranean coast and Galicia, to
celebrate this astronomical phenomenon, with which it was tried "to
give more force to the sun", that as of those days, it was become more
"weak" (the days are become shorter until the winter solstice). To Corunna it is the capital of the
province of Corunna. It is located in the noroccidental end of
Galicia. It is an Atlantic city with smooth climate. The
municipality occupies a surface of 36.8 km² and it reaches
the 243,349 inhabitants (2005), (396,015 in its metropolitan
agglomeration). Its urban area is second ampler of all the
independent community after Vigo and its density of the most elevated
population (6,600 Hab/km².). The buildable land shortage
and the necessity of places of urban relaxation cause that the ground
has reached an elevated price, which determines that the surfaces
dedicated to the agricultural and industrial activity are transferred
at the moment to the bordering municipalities of Corunna.
However, its character of coastal municipality grants to the
fishing great importance (more than by its direct jobs, indirect that
this activity generates in other sectors like the conservero or the
one of ice manufacture). All this causes that the sector
services is the predominant one in the city, constituting itself in
the economic and cultural center of the surrounding metropolitan area
(constituted by the city councils of Arteijo, Culleredo, Cambre,
Oleiros, Sada, Carral, Bergondo and Abegondo). + panoramas of Corunna
