The Corners. At the moment it is the center
of the daily life and of businesses of the city, one expands from the
palace of the Harbor Authority and the theater Rosalía de Castro to
the seat of General Spoz and Mine and the Palace of the subdelegation
of government. In this zone we can find the delegations of the main banks
of Spain, the emblematic building of the Bank Shepherd (highest of
Spain during years 20), the Obelisco (dedicated to Linares Rivas), the
Gardens of Méndez Núñez, the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses,
the theater Columbus, the Kiosco Alfonso and the palace of National
Radio (both of modernist character) and main the zone of purchases of
the city, that includes the streets Real, Water Irrigation, Elm trees,
Torreiro and Galera. To Corunna it is the capital of the
province of Corunna. It is located in the noroccidental end of
Galicia. It is an Atlantic city with smooth climate. The
municipality occupies a surface of 36.8 km² and it reaches
the 243,349 inhabitants (2005), (396,015 in its metropolitan
agglomeration). Its urban area is second ampler of all the
independent community after Vigo and its density of the most elevated
population (6,600 Hab/km².). The buildable land shortage
and the necessity of places of urban relaxation cause that the ground
has reached an elevated price, which determines that the surfaces
dedicated to the agricultural and industrial activity are transferred
at the moment to the bordering municipalities of Corunna.
However, its character of coastal municipality grants to the
fishing great importance (more than by its direct jobs, indirect that
this activity generates in other sectors like the conservero or the
one of ice manufacture). All this causes that the sector
services is the predominant one in the city, constituting itself in
the economic and cultural center of the surrounding metropolitan area
(constituted by the city councils of Arteijo, Culleredo, Cambre,
Oleiros, Sada, Carral, Bergondo and Abegondo). to see more panoramas of Corunna > >
